Anyway while reading it I got a couple of questions people may be able to help me with:
- why are God's words not in red letter, while Jesus' are?
- God seems to do a lot of speaking direct to people in the Old Testament, but does he speak direct to people (Genesis 46:2 - wow!) in the New Testament (or does Jesus do all the talking)?

I have no idea why man has recorded Jesus' words in red but not God's.
In the old testament God did talk directly to certain people - his prophets, his chosen leaders, his obedient followers. When i was young i use to think that was much better and it wasn't fair he stopped doing that.
But now I know better. Instead of talking to us thru a few, he decided to live in each of us through his holy spirit so we would know him personally.
In old testament times only a few had personal relationships with the LORD, so it made it harder for the general public to identify with him on the same level...they were always rebelling. They had rules and regulations to represent God's will.
But when Jesus came he showed us that God actually wants to be our friend, our confidante, our first love.
God wanted this for all the generations to come, so he gave us his spirit to dwell in us, to teach us and guide personally. So each of us know his will, so he could renew our minds, and change our hearts. change from the inside out.
...does God speak to people in the NT?
Off the top of my head God spoke through Jesus and the Holy Spirit and even angels in NT times.
Tho, when Jesus was baptised, the gospels record that a voice from heaven was heard. That may have been the last time God's voice was heard.
